Family connections for James (Layton) are: Some amendments added Nov 2025. LAYTON James (Layton/Leighton) was born about 1792/5. He was tried for grand larceny of coach glasses, on 10 10 1813, of John (James) at probably Old Bailey, sentenced to 7years, held at Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 27 1 1815 after a journey of 3months on MARQUIS OF WELLINGTON. He was a printer in 1820 when he married Elizabeth (Warby her first marriage) on 8 2 1820 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. He is recorded in 1822 as Free by Servitude landholder Liverpool with his family. He was baptised age about34 on 2 11 1826 with his family at St Marys RC Sydney; a practice observed when Catholic services became available. He died on 23 2/3 1828 age36. [Some details taken from this Website] Elizabeth (Warby) was born on 30 9 1802 & baptised on 23 12 1804 at St Johns CofE Parramatta. She is recorded in 1822 with her family at Liverpool. She was Free by Servitude by 1826. She was baptised again age23 on 2 11 1826 with her family at St Marys RC Sydney. She is recorded in 1828 with her family on 30acres at Airds. She married secondly James (Kiernan) surgeon Picton-Campbelltown on 9 2 1828 (also recorded, as surgeon of Airds, on 24 2 1829) at St Marys RC Sydney. She died on 12 7 1894 age91 mother of 4known children. Details of Elizabeth (Warby)s family are given in entry for John (Walbeyy PITT 1792) on this Website. James (Layton) & Elizabeth (Warby) produced at least 4children: 1.Ele/anor (Layton) was born on 15 3 1821 at Bunbury Curran & baptised on 2 11 1826 age5 w/William & her parents at St Marys RC Sydney. She is recorded in 1822 with her parents at Liverpool. She is recorded in 1828 with her mother at Airds. She died on 22 9 1904 age83. 2.William (Layton) was born 10/11 10 1823 at Bumbury Curran & baptised on 6 3 1825 at St Peters CofE Campbelltown & again on 2 11 1826 age3 w/Elenor & his parents at St Marys RC Sydney-taking advantage of arrival of Catholic clergy. He is recorded in 1828 with his mother at Airds. He died on 10 4 1881 age57. 3.James/John (Layton) was born on 11 6 1826 at Bunbury Curran & baptised on 29 6 1826 at St Marys RC Sydney. He is recorded in 1828 with his mother at Airds. He died on 23 3 1867 age40. 4.John (Layton) was born on 24 3 1828. He died in June 1828 age about3m. In 1828, after the death of James.... Sainty & Johnson; 1828 Census of New South Wales: [Ref L0396] (page 232) Layton, Elizabeth, 26, BC, Landholder at Airds. 30 acres, all cleared and cultivated. [Ref L0397] Layton, Eleanor, 8, born in colony. [Ref L0398] Layton, William, 5, born in colony. [Ref L0399] Layton, James, 2, born in colony.

In the 1822 Muster: Layton, James, free by servitude, Marquis Wellington, 7 years, landholder at Liverpool. Layton, Elizabeth, wife of above Layton, Elenor, born in the colony, child of above.

In the colony, James married Elizabeth Warby, 1820 at Sydney. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Warby (Convict, Pitt, 1792) and Sarah Bentley (Convict, Indispensible, 1796). James and Elizabeth had three children, Eleanor 1820, William 1823 and James (jnr) 1824. Elizabeth became a widow in 1828 when James died. She herself lived until 1894 (aged 92).

JAMES LEIGHTON was indicted for feloniously stealing, on the 10th of October , two coach glasses, value 3 l. the property of John Jones. JOHN JONES . I am a coach-maker . I only know that the glasses are mine. WILLIAM ROUND . On the 10th of October I was driving Mr. Jones's coach, and when I set off from my master's house. The glasses were safe, and as I was going along Charles-street I saw the coach door open. I saw nothing done to the coach. From information, I came up to the prisoner in Union-street. He had one glass with him. I saw another man before him with the other coach glass. EDWARD OBDELL . I am a watchman. I stopped the prisoner. He let the glass fall. I took it up, and another watchman stopped the man with the other glass. These are the two glasses. Round. They are Mr. Jones's glasses. The prisoner said nothing in his defence, nor called any witnesses to character. GUILTY , aged 20. Transported for Seven Years . First Middlesex jury, before Mr. Common Serjeant.
