Mary Leader (1818-1896) was born in London in 1818, the daughter of Magnus and Annie Leader. Mary was charged and convicted at the Old Bailey (London Central Criminal Court) of embezzlement on 17 August 1835, this being her second offence and having served two months for a prior offence. Sentenced to seven years transportation, Mary sailed on the “Henry Wellesley†from Portsmouth on 7th October 1835. She is described as a housemaid, 4’10†tall (148 centimetres) with a ruddy and pock-marked complexion, light hair and grey eyes. She had tattooed initials on her arms and could read and write. She married William Fuller (1804-1875), boatbuilder of Scotchtown, Kempsey, Macleay River, on 10th October 1836 at St Thomas' Church, Port Macquarie. They lived on the Upper Macleay at Hickey's Creek where between 1843 and 1862 they Fuller died 9th September 1875 and is buried in West Kempsey Cemetery. Mary Leader Fuller died 11th August 1896 and is buried at Tom's Gully Cemetery, Hickey's Creek, Upper Macleay.
