FELONlOUS ASSAULT. John Leary, a young man about 30 years of age, and a policeman stationed at Ballybrue, in this county, was indicted for a felonious assault upon the person of a young girl named Mary Malony, aged 15, upon the 25th of September, 1854. Sergeant O’Brien, Messrs. M. Barry, and J. B. Green appeared for the prosecutrix, and Mr. Keys, solicitor, defended the prisoner. There were several witnesses produced to sustain the indictment. It appeared from their subjoined testimony that the prosecutrix was servant in the employment of schoolmaster named Hartstonge, and having been sent about one o’clock in the day-time to the village of Ballybrue, to purchase a pint of whiskey, when returning she met the prisoner on the road, who forcibly effected bis purpose. The girl received a very good character; and the doctor, who saw her immediately after the transaction, deposed to circumstances which fully corroborated the crown case. The prisoner was convicted. Sentence deferred. Belfast Mercury, 20 July 1855. John Leary was sent to Bermuda as a convict. Bermuda Indents, HO-11-18_4 p.35.
