Convict Notes
Hampshire Lent Assizes. Samuel Lees and Benjamin Newton, for breaking open house, at Portsmouth, and stealing therefrom three uniform coats and various other articles. Hampshire Chronicle, 3 Mar 1817. Samuel Lees, Benjamin Newton, and Mary Taylor were indicted, the two first for burglary in the house of Jane Buchan, Portsmouth, and stealing various articles of wearing apparel; and the latter for receiving, knowing them to be stolen. The articles in question were deposited in a trunk, belonging officer, which was left in charge of the prosecutrix On receiving information, Mrs. Buchan went, accompanied by constable, to a house in Nelsons-court, Crown-street, where the female prisoner resided. It appeared, that after getting the trunk from the cellar, they carried it to the back of the Workhouse, under the Ramparts, and filling large bag with the contents, they went the house where Taylor lodged. On searching, the constable found haversack full linen, and her trunk bed-cover. The Jury found all three prisoners Guilty. Hampshire Chronicle, 10 Mar 1817.
