Margaret LEHANE was convicted at Cork, Ireland on 25 June 1850 for setting fire to hay (circumstances in Ireland for these crimes need to be understood). 10 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia per the 'Blackfriar' arriving 29 May 1851. Aged 23yrs; 4'9" height; housemaid; Roman Catholic; can read; ruddy complexion; light brown hair; blue eyes. Native place of birth: City of Cork, Ireland. No relatives are listed. Colony of VDL: Various assignments of service work in the Hobart district. 18 July 1853: Absconded. 18 mths hard labour. DEATH: 31 May 1854 - died in the hospital of the Female House of Correction, Hobart. INQUEST: 2 June 1854 - inquest into the death of Margaret LEHANE as to her death at the Female House of Correction - natural causes, dropsy. (ref. SC195/1/35 no. 3289)
