Escape of A Convict—Solomon Hearn, sentenced to transportation at the late Oakham assizes, for robbing the coach-house of the Ladies Noel at Luffenham,  made his escape on Monday in the following manner.—he and two other transports convicted at the same assizes (England Hearn and Daniel Lewin) were being conveyed to London on the Old Stamford coach, guarded  by the gaoler of Oakham, a turnkey, and a man …. The prisoners handcuffed and-ironed, but not chained together, were placed in the front of the coach, their guardians taking their post in the rear. About eleven at night, when the travellers were three miles south of Biggleswade, Hearn got from the coach, and was not missed by his vigilant watchmen until they had proceeded some distance from the spot where their charge had given them the slip. It was confessed by the two remaining convicts that Hearn’s  irons would not impede his course, for they had been partly sawn of in Oakham gaol, and partly in Stamford  gaol, in which latter he lay only from 6 in the morning of Monday till 3in the afternoon, the hour the coach started. His retreat has not yet been discovered, and probably never will: he is a gipsey, and we understand there are some gangs of this wandering brotherhood in the neighbourhood of Biggleswade, among whom he has doubtless thrown himself for protection.  Drakard’s Stamford News, 13 Sept 1816.

Robbery.—… On Monday last, whilst Mr. Jackson, grocer, of Oakham, was at dinoer, John Lewin (son of Daniel Lewin) entered his shop, and robbed it of cash aud notes to a considerable amount. Suspicion was immediately entertained of the thief, as he had been observed loitering about the window, &c. the former part of the day, and a neighbour of Lewin’s had seen the father and son hiding something  in their garden. On search being made, part of the stolen property was found at the place described, and the remainder was found hid in different parts of the house. They are both committed to Oakham gaol.—Two other sons of Daniel Lewin are in the same prison for stealing poultry.   Drakard’s Stamford News, 12 April 1816.  Within the last fortnight, four persons of the family Lewin, of Oakham, have been committed to Oakham gaol, for different thefts: the eldest and second son, for a robbery on the premises of Mr. Stimson, butcher, of Oakham; and Daniel Lewin, the father, and his son John, a boy of about 14 years of age, for stealing from a drawer in the shop of Mr. Jackson, grocer, also of Oakham, notes and cash to the amount of  more than 150/. Nearly the whole of this property has been recovered, being found on the premises of Lewin. Stamford Mercury, 19 April 1816.  At the Rutland Assizes, John Lewin, aged twelve, was capitally convicted of stealing notes and cash to the amount of ? and Daniel Lewin, his, father, was also convicted of receiving the same, knowing them to have been stolen. The Judge, in passing sentence,  remarked with much severity upon the conduct of the latter prisoner, in bringing up a child to robbery and plunder.  The boy was reprieved. The father to be transported for fourteen years. Star, 6 Aug 1816.
