Family connections for Richard (Lewis) are: Amendment added Feb 2026 LEWIS EXPLORER Richard (Lewis) son of William (Lewis) & Mary (???) was born about 1770/84 at Cuxton Kent. He may have been relation of George (Lewis COROMANDEL 1802). He was tried at Surrey Quarter Sessions, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 14 8 1802 after a voyage of 7months on COROMANDEL. He was Free by Servitude by 1807 & cohabited with Mary Ann (Roberts her first relationship) whom he later married. In 1813 he was overseer on George W (Evans) farm &, as a free man. accompanied George W (Evans) in 1815 when being first to discover central western plains, exploring the Lett, Fish & Macquarie Rivers. He is shown to have arrived in Bathurst in 1815 from Windsor & lived at Lewis Ponds Creek. He promoted fair treatment for aborigines. He became Superintendent, perhaps with his wife, building first road to Bathurst, then first Superintendent for growing wheat in Bathurst area (all country west of Blue Mountains); & a cattle breeder. He married Mary Ann (Roberts) on 3 1 1825 at St James CofE Sydney. He was part of a party exploring lower reaches of Macquarie River & maybe chose sites for Wellington & Forbes; he founded the town of Mudgee. He was a settler when he died on 25 1 1828 age58 at Bathurst & was buried at Bathurst/Holy Trinity Kelso. [Noted the Bathurst reference, compiled by descendants, shows Richard (Lewis) as arriving in 1799 on HILSBOROUGH; the ship was riddled with typhoid & bad management; the entry on this Website shows the person being tried at Kent Assizes, sentenced to Life & arriving in NSW as a convict on 26 7 1799 after a voyage of 9months on HILSBOROUGH. On this Website this person is shown as being employed by William (Palmer) from 1805 & dying about 1808.] [Noted a Richard (Lewis emancipist 1802 COROMANDEL) is recorded as dying on 19 9 1820 age50 & buried at St Johns CofE Parramatta-there is no record of another Richard (Lewis) on this voyage; AND a Richard (Lewis) is recorded as dying in 1827 age50 ] [Some details taken from this Website] Mary Ann (Roberts) was born on 26 7 1792 in the colony. She is stated (on this Website) to be aboriginal, although this is also clearly disputed on this Website. She arrived in Bathurst before 1818 with her partner. She married secondly James (Evans) on 5 1 1829 at Holy Trinity Kelso-permission given by Government-& produced 3children. She died on 16 12 1868 age76 mother of at least 10children. He died on 13 11 1852 age perhaps42. 5.Louisa (Lewis) was born on 16 2 1817 at Richmond & baptised on 10 9 1820 age3 at St Peters CofE Richmond. She died on 24 6 1851 age about50. 6.William (Lewis) was born on 14 4 1820 at Richmond. He died in 1867 age about47. 7.Elizabeth Esther (Lewis) was born on 6 2 1824 at Richmond & baptised on 9 1 1825 at St James CofE Sydney. She died on 25 4 1893 age68. ROBERTS John (Roberts) arrived in Australia as a marine. He was discharged as a marine in Sydney in October 1791 & went to Norfolk Island with NSW Corps on 26 10 1791 arriving on 4 11 1791. He had a relationship with Jane (Jackson her first relationship) & was recorded as a marine in 1792. He was recorded as a private with NSW Corps in February 1805 on Norfolk Island. Noted 2of John (Roberts) are recorded as dying in 1820s at Parramatta; ie.as labourer on 5 10 1826 age50 in Sydney-buried at St Phillips CofE Sydney- & as settler on 28 11 1826 age58, buried at St James CofE Sydney. She was tried with 1other for stealing watch etc, on 6 6 1786, of Martin (Rowley) at probably Old Bailey, sentenced to 7years, held at Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 22 1 1788 after a voyage of 12months on First Fleet ship LADY PENRHYN. She was sent to Norfolk Island on 4 3 1790 & returned to Port Jackson in March 1793 on CHESTERFIELD. She married secondly, as Hester (Roberts), Ferdinand (Dowlan/d/Doolan) on 4 9 1796 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. She died on 4 6 1804 age48 mother of 1known child & was buried, as Esther (Roberts emancipist wife of Ferdinand (Dowland)), on 27 4 1804 at St Phillips CofE Sydney).
