Convict Notes

An Ancestry record for the microfilm entry gives a death date of "1799" but an archivist at Museums of History New South Wales double-checked the microfilm in 2024 and confirmed that this is a transcription error. There are no other records for an Ephraim Lindsay in Australia. It therefore seems certain that he died en route in 1790, or immediately after landing.

Ephraim was found guilty of stealing meat from butcher shops in the Alnwick area of Northumberland. His family was a very old and well respected Roman Catholic one who suffered economic hardship because of the insidious informant system then in vogue. Ephraim had a large family to feed including a son who was only four years old when he was transported. Ephraim was my 4th Great Grandfather.
