My name isShirley Linnell I also am a great great grand daughter to Convict John Linnell l am looking after the grave of Catherine Murphy Iirish convict to John Catherine s grave is at Red Hills cemetery Bushy Park along side of her is Mary Linnell Williams first wife died young leaving three little girls William married very soon after but no mention of where these little girls went to live. I also could not find any siblings to William Linnell but he married several times. My father spoke of Catherine and his pet name to mum wasMrs Murphy. I believe he knew quiet a lot in story. My grandfather was born to Williams second wife was born at New Norfolk The Linnell men also worked on the. West coast of Tasmania early days of mining and logging using bullocks for transport William and his father John worked around the Oatlands area with milling timber for building. William is buried at Cornelian bay cemetery with wife Mary




John Linnell was single, 5'8" tall, fair complexion brown hair and whiskers, grey eyes, heart and dart, 2 L's inside right arm, little finger crippled right hand, L and 2 dots inside left arm. 1/1/1852: Absconded from Cascades and was sent to Norfolk Island 23/1/1852. 30/8/1862: Obtaining money by false pretences - 1 month Hard Labour. 23/10/1854: Married Catherine Murphy (Midlothian 1853)at Hobart. Catherine's mother Mary had been transported 7 years previously. John died at Hamilton, Tasmania. Catherine died 12/3/1882 at New Norfolk, Tasmania.




John Linnell was my great great grandfather. he was baptised at Whittlebury Northamptonshire on 13th August 1826. in 1841 (aged 15) he was living at silverstone Northamptonshire. on 2nd. September 1845 (aged 19) at London England, he enlisted as a Gunner, in the East India Company. he sailed to Bombay India on the HEIC ship "Herefordshire. on the 22nd December 1848 at Bombay, John was court martialed, along with Michael Walsh, for stealing the treasury box containing 2000 rupees. in 1849 (aged 23) he was transported from Madras India, to VDL, on the Johannes Sarkies. a merchant ship, trading with the East India Company. he served time at Cascades Hobart, Port Arthur, and Norfolk Island. on 23rd. October 1854 (aged 28) John Linnell married Catherine Murphy in Hobart Tasmania. as far as i know, John and catherine only had one son, William, who was my great grandfather. John Linnell died on 6th November 1884 (aged 58) at hamilton Tasmania. Ide like to give thanks to John and catherine for my existance.
