The 'Kitty' merchant built ship at Sunderland in 1787. In 1790 she carried slaves from the Gold Coast to Jamaica. Then in 1792 she transported convicts and goods from England to New South Wales, Australia. Voyage to Australia: After leaving England in March 1792 she sprung a leak and had to return to Spithead for repairs, departing again in April. 8 of the 10 male prisoners escaped. Only 30 female convicts, 3 died during the voyage. Carried supplies of stores and provisions for the Colony.

NSW Records. Digitised Indent of Kitty https://content.archives.nsw.gov.au/delivery/StreamGate?dps_pid=FL397104&dps_dvs=1781597751458~836 John Lock, Tried Co. of Middlesex, 14 Sept 1791, Life. Old Bailey records show that John Lock was tried on 20 July 1791, for Highway Robbery and was sentenced to Death. On 14 Sep 1791, he was among a group of prisoners whose Death sentence was commuted to Tra nsportation for Life. The old Bailey trial record gives his age as 37 years. The day after Kitty departed Deptford, Eight (8) of the ten (10) male convicts escaped from the Kitty when it re-docked for repairs. Apparently only 2 male convicts reached Australia from that ship. We are still trying to find their names of the two that arrived.
