Convict Notes
Henry Lodge and Elizabeth Jane Stephens (also a convict serving 7 years) went on to have 8 children, one of which, Eliza Jane, went on to marry William Thompson, the grandson of convict called William Thompson who was the shepherd at Clarendon Estate near Morven (Evandale), owned by wealthy colonist James Cox. It would appear that this union helped Henry get a job on the Clarendon estate. James Cox created the nearby village of Lymington, now called Nile, to house his farm workers. Henry and Elizabeth lived at Nile. Elizabeth died in 1873 of tuberculosis aged 46. Henry remarried 2 years later, to Caroline Vines - Henry was 50, she was 26. Henry is fathered a further 8 children (for a total of 16 children combined from 2 marriages and the last child just 5 years before his death) before he died in 1897 aged 72. The Lodge family’s reputation increased in the early 1900’s when Henry’s nephew Isaac Lodge (1866-1923) was awarded the Victoria Cross for action in 1900 at South Africa in the Boer War.
18/2/1842 Essex Standard Essex, England: ESSEX ADJOURNED SESSION John Neville, 18; Henry Lodge, 17 ; David Stock, 15, labourers, charged with having broken into the dwelling-house of Edward Witham, and stolen two hams, 3 loves of bread and 4 cheeses. John Neville was also on board. No ship found for David Stock. Henry Lodge was listed as 18 years old on arrival. He was born near Chelmsford and was illiterate. Henry was 5'4¾" tall, fresh complexion, brown hair, dark hazel eyes, scar on forehead, blind of right eye, tattoos: H.L A.B.S. single. Father: James at native place. Mother: Elizabeth Brothers: John, William Sistrs: Mary, Ann. 30/4/1850: TOL 14/5/1850: Permission to marry Elizabeth Jane Stephens (Stately 1849). 3/6/1850: Married at St. Peters, Hamilton - both aged 23 - 10 children. 24/5/1853: CP 25/4/1856: COF Morven. 23/2/1875: Married Caroline Vines, 26, at St Andrew's Church, Evadale - Henry was 47. a widower - they had 8 children. 2/11/1897: Henry Lodge died at Sandhill, South Launceston of Apoplexy and senility - aged 77 years - listed as a Wood Carter.
