Convict Notes




The Convict Indentures state that Michael Lonergan was 28 years old. He could not read or write; he was married with two children; religion Roman Catholic and a native of Country Tipperary. His occupation was ploughman. He was convicted of burglary on 7 April 1828. He was sentenced to life and had two prior convictions. Physical attribute 5 feet 8 inches; complexion ruddy, freckled and fair; hair dark brown and eyes hazel. Transport number 34. He was assigned to Mr John Palmer, Parramatta. He had an alias of Nicols and was know in the Queanbeyan/ Canberra region as Big Mick. On burial his name was written or interpreted as Landrigan. Queanbeyan Pioneer Register states that Michael Landrigan ("Big Mick"), ticket of leave man employed by Dr J. F. Murray (Woden), died early in May 1841 from injuries accidentally received in a gully near Queanbeyan while in a state of intoxication. Arrived per Governor Ready, 1829; ticket of leave 1838; employed by Charles Campbell (Duntroon). He married in May 1841 in the Oaks Estate (formally Queanbeyan) burial ground. The location of the burial ground is unknown.
