1839, 19 October: Pierre LOUIS is on a list of prisoners sentenced to transportation per “Water Witch” from Port Louis, Mauritius, to Van Diemen’s Land by the Criminal Court of the Colony of Mauritius. He is described as: single, aged 20, a servant; tried for theft at the Assizes on 23 September, 1839, and sentenced to 7 years; brown complexion, brown eyes and short curly hair; 5’7½”; small scar on the forehead and in the corner of left eye; native place Port Louis, Mauritius; cannot read or write (see New South Wales, Australia Convict Ship Muster Rolls and Related Records, 1790-1849; 1840 Layton).
