Louisa Light was transported on the John Renwick, departing 25th Apr 1838 and arriving 27th Aug 1838 with 173 passengers.
1842-43 Journey. THE John Renwick, with the new Colonial Secretary, J. C. Bicheno, Esq., arrived at Hobart Town the 10th instant. The John Renwick left London the 7th December, with 161 male convicts, under the care of D. Ring, Surgeon Superintendent; E. M. O'Connell, Commanding Officer; and 31 rank and file of the 99th regiment, three women, and two children. J. C. Bicheno, Esq., and F. Seymour, Esq., Assistant Colonial Secretary, passengers, with three servants. The John Renwick put into the Cape, and sailed thence on the 10th February. On the 26th, in latitude 37 ° 43* S., longitude 25 ° 40' E., she experienced a sudden gale, which rent all her sails to pieces, and carried away the cutter, from the larboard quarter. The Teetotal Advocate (Launceston) Mon 17 Apr 1843. 74 of the men were transported at the Special Commission held at Staffordshire in 1842, having been engaged in the riots in the Potteries at that time. 6/1/1838 Hampshire Advertiser Hampshire, England: SOUTHAMPTON QUARTER SESSIONS Louisa Light, aged 18, (R. W. imp.) was indicted for having on the 22nd day of November last, at the parish of St. Mary, unlawfully received from William Wiggins, one silver spoon of the value of five shillings, the property of property of William Betts, then late before feloniously stolen, taken and carried away by the said William Wiggins, the said Louisa Light well knowing the same to have been feloniously stolen, taken and carried away. The prisoner stood further charged with having on the 11th of October last, received from William Wiggins a diamond ring of the value of two pounds, well knowing the same to have been stolen. The jury returned a verdict of William Wiggins, Guilty--Louisa Light, Not Guilty. The same prisoner was next indicted for the stealing of the ring of Mr. Jellicoe, and pleaded Not Guilty. The female prisoner, on being asked whether guilty or not guilty, said she did not know the ring was stolen......The prisoners lived at a house of ill-fame in York-square..... The Recorder, in addressing the male prisoner, commented on the number of depredations he had committed, and sentenced him on the first conviction to seven years transportation, and for the second indictment to seven years transportation, to commence on the expiration of the first sentence, and for the third indictment to be fined 6d. The female prisoner having been convicted before, and still continuing her evil courses, was sentenced to transportation for seven years. William Wiggins arrived VDL per 'Lord William Bentinck' 1838. Louisa Light was listed as 20 years old on arrival. Native Place: Southampton. Louisa was literate, protestant, single, 5'0" tall, dark ruddy and freckled complexion, brown hair and eyes, WHWH heart, R outside upper right arm, WHW outside upper left arm, scar on ball of left thumb, small dot on back of left thumb. 1840: Married Thomas Cook at St Phillips, Sydney.
