The 'Adelaide' arrived at Hobart, VDL on 29 Nov 1849 and disembarked 40 men. The ship then sailed to Port Phillip, Victoria but was refused entry and so sailed on to Port Jackson, New South Wales arriving there 24 Dec 1849. 1855 voyage: departed Portland, England on 19 April 1855, arriving Fremantle, Western Australia on 18 July 1855. 260 convicts, 1 death. The ship also carried 30 Pensioner Guards and their families.

On arrival James was employed at the hotel at Boydtown. 1849: TOL 15/10/1850: TOL Passport - On the recommendation of Commissioner of Crown Lands, Maneroo. James lived in Eden and in 1882 moved to Towanba and carried the mail between Towanba and Nangutta, then was employed at Nangutta Station. James went to Ballarat to mine for gold, then returned to the Towamba district where he lived at Pericoe, his property was called Love's Valley. 1/6/1860 Married Mary Hite(1842-1871) at Eden. They had 7 children. 19/2/1872: Married Ellen Hard(1849-1900). They had 11 children. 2/12/1902: Married Matilda Newland at Eden. No issue. 14/8/1906: James died aged 76 and was buried in Eden with his first wife Mary.




His sentence was 7 Years for stealing a small piece of lead pipe worth 5 shillings.
