Last week was committed to the Suffolk County Gaol (by John Kerrich and John Gurdon, Esqs.) George Lovett, charged with having stolen at divers times, certain bank notes and gold monies, the property of Messrs. Gurneys, Turner, and Brightwen, bankers and co-partners of O. W. B. Bohun, Esq. of Beccles. Norfolk Chronicle, 15 May 1830. ----------------------------------------------------- George Lovett, for stealing certain bank notes and monies of the value of ?00/. and upwards, from the dwelling-house of G. W. B. Bohun Esq. of Beccles, the property of Messrs. Gurney, Turner, and Brightwen, copartners. The prisoner was a respectable looking man, about 37 years of years, and had been confidential clerk to Mr. Bohun. He has a wife & children. My 3rd Great Grandfather. Born 29 Jan 1793. May have attended Bungay Grammar School (Founded in 1509 by Lionel Throckmorton). 27 Oct 1815 - Married at St Michael's Church, Beccles to Esther Thurgate. Clerk in Savings Bank, Beccles for nearly 20 years. 1st Class Clerk of Mr Bohun - new job or additional work. 1 May 1830 - Confessed and convicted of stealing "Felony" / embezzlement, commuted to Ipswich Gaol-Bury Assizes 16 July 1830. Trial at Suffolk Assizes, Bury St Edmunds. Sentence: Transported to Van Diemens Land 14years for stealing bank noad of 600g+ from home of G.W.H. Bohun Esq of Beccle and partners Messrs Gurney, Turner and Bright. Held in 'the hulks' prior to transport 9 weeks later on "John" from Spithead on 14 Oct 1830 via Madeira and Cape of Good Hope. 28 Jan 1831 - Arrived VDL. [population 8,360] Lt Gov George Arthur in charge from 1824, after William Sorell, up to 29 Oct 1836. 15 Oct 1830 called for Black Line, but this failed. George was assigned as a Writer in the Office of the Principal Superintendent of Convicts [Josiah Spode] located at 21 Elizabeth St. From June in leisure hours worked for Mr J.O. Pinker - 13 Elizabeth St business [near home of George Augustus Robinson at 41 Elizabeth St. Befriended GAR from 1834 as evidenced in letter to McKenzie]. Feb - Jun 1831 - Seconded to Office of Colonial Treasurer. 15 Oct 1831 - seeks passage for his family to join him. 14 Jan 1832 - Secretary of State, Viscount Howick, approves passage of 19 convict's families, including George's. Late 1832 or early 1833, Esther and 8 children arrive. 6 Jan 1837 - Sir John Franklin (nephew of Matthew Flinders) arrives as new Governor. [population 43k - 75% convict] 22 Jun 1838 - George granted a 'conditional pardon' 25 Aug 1843 - Eardley Wilmot replaced Franklin as Govenor til sudden death Oct 1846, then Sir William Denison arrived 25 Jan 1847. 1844 - George given Free Certificate No. 732. 1850 - Still living at 9 Davey St. 19 Aug 1851 - George writes to Mr W.H. McKenzie in Melbourne, referring to G.A. Robinson. [copy in Mitchell library - not located as of 31/12/2021] Moved to [30] Montpelier Retreat, Battery Point. [Also called Cottage Green or Montpelier St] Abolition of transportation movement - Mr Pitcairn, George's employer, was a leader. Ended on 28 Apr 1853. 13 Sep 1854 - Sir William Denison appointed Governor-General of the Aust Colonies. Replaced by Sir Henry Edward Fox Young ex Governor of S.A. in Jan 1855. 21 Dec 1855 - Tasmania constitutionally established. Died of apoplexy while attending service in All Saints Church, Macquarie St. Buried in St George's Burial Grounds, Albuera St.




His family joined him in Australia 14 years later after he became a free man.His family and offspring contributed much to Australias heritage.William Lovett (son) became Auditor General of Tasmania, Mildred Lovett world renowned Artist, Alfred Lovett Poet by pen name of Barkis, in fact there are many Accountants and Solicitors fronm this branch of the Lovett tree.From a humble beginning and enduring hardship the legacy of George Lovett convict remains today.




George Lovett was 38 years old when transported for stealing money from his employer's, Messrs. Gurney's Turner & Co., who were Bankers. George was 5'6" tall, fair complexion, Red brown hair and whiskers, light brown eyes. He was married to Esther and had 9 children. 10/10/1834: TOL 22/6/1838: CP 1844: COF. 1861: John died on a Sunday morning and expired suddenly at All Saints' Church, Macquarie Street, during the reading of the first Psalm. He was an elder of the church. Georges' wife and children must have joined him in VDL.
