Old Bailey: JOHN LUDWIG, Theft > stealing from master, 18th February 1830. Offence: Theft > stealing from master Verdict: Guilty Punishment: Transportation JOHN LUDWIG was indicted for stealing, on the 9th of February, 1 coat, value 4l., the goods of Frederick George John Burghart, his master. The prisoner, being a foreigner, had the evidence interpreted to him. ALEXANDER JOHN BURGHART. I am the son of Frederick George John Burghart - he is a tailor, and lives in Clifford-street. The prisoner was a journeyman in his shop for three or four months, but did not live in the house; we missed a coat of a customers on the 9th of February - we did not know where the prisoner lodged till he told us in the evening; we went there with an officer, and found five gilt buttons, but the coat we found in pawn. FRANCIS BYAR . I am a pawnbroker. I believe this to be the coat I took in pledge from Anna Kessner. ANNA KESSNER. I know the prisoner - he asked me to pawn the coat, which I did for 30s., and I gave him the money; he is a Dutchman - I have known him three years, and speak his language.(Property produced and sworn to.) Prisoner's Defence. It was not my intention to steal it- I expected money from Holland, and I would have brought it to my master's; I was starving, with my wife and children - I asked my master and the foreman to advance me 1l.; I had no bread and no work for a fortnight -I could have sent for friends if I had known it had been necessary. ALEXANDER JOHN BURGHART. My father paid him for what he did; he had only been there one hour that week - he could have as much work as he chose to do. GUILTY . Aged 38. - Transported for Seven Years. There was another indictment against the prisoner. 1839: Married Mary Benton at St Lawrence's church, Sydney. Children: 1838 John 1843 Jessie 1845 Henry F - 19/7/1870 Married Mary Cosier. 1845 Frederick H J 1847 Lavinia - 21/12/1865 Married Henry Potter. 1850 Caroline 28/11/1842 The Australian, Sydney: BERRIMA POUND. — Mr. John Ludwig has been appointed Pound Keeper at Berrima vice Ellis Jacobs, resigned. 7/4/1847: COF 1/7/1848 Sydney Morning Herald: POUNDKEEPER.-At the last Court of Petty Sessions, John Ludwig was removed from the office of poundkeeper for dereliction of his duty. The magistrate the same day appointed Richard Whitfield to the office. 8/7/1881 Sydney Morning Herald: LUDWIG,-July 5, 1881, Pitnacree, via East Maitland, the beloved wife of John Ludwig, late of Parramatta, in her 70th year. Leaving a large family to mourn her loss. 12/9/1882 Maitland Mercury: LOST OR STOLEN. FIVE POUNDS REWARD, will be given, if STOLEN, on CONVICTION OF THE THIEF, or ONE POUND REWARD if STRAYED, for recovery of the following Horse. A chestnut gelding, seven jears old, white down face, branded near shoulder G and on off shoulder £Q C JOHN LUDWIG. Pitnacree Bridge, September 11,1882. 11/9/1885 Sydney Morning Herald: LUDWIG.—September 10, at the residence of his daughter, Rose-street, Parramatta, John Ludwig, in his 86th year, leaving four daughters and two sons to deplore their loss.




John (Johannes)Ludwig was born in Utrecht, Holland to Peter Ludwig (F) and Catharina van Keeken (M) on 12/01/1800. He was married to Hermina Wick on 05/11/1823 in Utrecht.
