The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

William Luff was transported for Robbing the White Hart Inn at Ketton, Rutlandshire, he had an accomplice. 16/1/1818: On list of convicts forwarded to Liverpool for distribution. 16/1/1818: Assigned to J T Campbell for use on his Shancamore Estate, Bringelly. 6/10/1825: COF 10/9/1839: Superintendant of the Henry Bingham Estate, County of Murray, Cowen. 1841 Census: At Gobarrolong, district of Murrumbidgee (near Gundagai) 1842-1845: Held depasturing licenses at Cowera on the Murrumbidgee. 14/9/1837: Married Catherine Devlyn (1816-12/7/1895) and they had 8-9 children. 255/6/1852: William Luff drowned in the flood at Gundagai in 1852.
