On Thursday arrived from Calcutta, via Derwent, the ship Mary, Captain Ormon, with a various cargo. -Passengers from Calcutta, Captain Faithfull and Lieutenant Hamilton:-The Mary sailed from Calcutta the 23d of February, and left the Pilot the 1st of March. James Lumby and Wm. Motty alias Morty, a mare from Wm. Sharp, of Pudsey,, Hull Advertiser, 23 March 1821. James Lumby (21), and William Motty alias Mortimer (27), for stealing a mare—Guilty, Death. Monday morning the following convicts left York castle, in order delivered on board the Laurel hulk, lying up the river below Portsmouth: William Mortimer, James Pearson. John Thomas Smith, Samuel Smith, Job Leach, alias Kershaw, Samuel Gatehouse, John Ogden, David Frudd, John Mountain, Thomas Smith, Matthew Stark, John Noblet, and James Lumby, to be severally transported during the. term of their natural lives: Sheffield Independent, 19 May 1821.




James was born in Stanningley, Yorkshire, England probably on 28 Feb 1797 (some confusion over year). He died in Wahgunyah, Victoria (AUS). He married Charlotte Emma GAMBLE (not GABLE) in 1843.




4/8/1830: Permission to marry Anne Shepherd (Lucy Davidson 1829). There is a death on the Convict Death Register for Ann Sheppard (Lucy Davidson) died 28/2/1834 at Parramatta, and no marriage recorded on the NSW BDM. 1843: Married Charlotte E (known as Emma) Gable, at Narellan. "Emma" was born 23/10/1824 and died 1879 at Corowa NSW. They had 9 children. 1876: James died at Corowa, aged 75.


Granted Ticket of Leave by the Liverpool Bench on 22 Jun 1831 and 30 Jun 1836. Granted Conditional Pardon in 1839.
