Convict Notes

City Court. On Tuesday Mr. Justice Jebb entered the City Court, … Patrick Mace, was indicted for stealing lead off the dwelling house of James O'Hea, George’s Quay, and Ellen ? and Ellen McCarthy were indicted for receiving the same, knowing it to have been stolen. The 17th April, the watchman, Queenan, was proceeding down towards Cove-street, into Mary-street, where he discovered the male prisoner with bundle of lead, and on enquiries, he said it from a man named Mc‘Cart? ? him further, received an impertinent reply. The watch man took him immediately, while going down George’s-quay, he discovered lead stolen from off the house of Mr. O'Hea. whom he called out of bed,—— They then proceeded to Mc'Carthy’s house (in company with O'Hea) which the watchman had some knowledge, and there they discovered the two female prisoners, one of whom was wife to Mc'Carthy, melting down the lead. The male prisoner was convicted, and the female prisoners were acquitted. The prisoner Mace begged of the Court to inflict a mild punishment on him, but the Court observed, that he was an old offender, that the punishment attached to his offence was transportation and even if the Court had the power of mitigating it, his Lordship would not be disposed so to do. To be transported for seven years. Cork Constitution, 23 Aug 1827.
