Eliza Healy, the frequency of whoso offences has made her notorious, was charged with larceny. James Garvey, of William street, dealer, deposed that on Wednesday the prisoner came to his shop with a man, who purchased and paid for a pair of boots; while attending to his customer, witness also saw prisoner take down a pair of boots and put them under her shawl ; when she was about to leave he advised her to put down the boots she had under her shawl, and while he was speaking they fell at her feet : he detained her, and gave her into custody. Eliza Madden, alias ElizaHealy, and Anne Evans, were charged with stealing a pair of boots from a man named Earl, a shoe-maker in Market-street; A man named John Lieher, a dealer, living in Fort-street, deposed to buying the boots from the prisoners, who went into Mr. Earl's shop for the purpose of selling a shawl. On Tuesday Eliza Madden, per Pyramus, seven years, was convicted of absconding from her assigned service in George-street, and was sentenced to the third class for two months and then being an arraigned on a charge of assaulting a fellow servant in a most ferocious manner and threatening to serve her out, was convicted and sentenced to six months in the third class, in addition to her former sentence. As it is quite a common practice with such ladies as Eliza Madden to serve out their fellow servants who may happen to offend them, and immediately after to " bolt;" it is hoped that the bench will serve each of them in the same stile as she has been dealt with. It is the opinion of some parties well versed in the details of convict discipline, that all assaults by male convicts ought to be visited with corporal punishment as part of the sentence, and that in the case of the same offence being committed by females, solitary confinement in the cells at the commencement, and termination of the sentence to the third class ought to be in every case awarded. Sydney Gazette, 26 Dec 1839.
