Longford Assizes. SATURDAY. James Mahony and Hugh Quigly were indicted for assembling with others and assaulting the habitation of Pat Farrelly, at Curragrane, on the night of the 29th of June last; and in another count they were charged with assaulting Farrelly himself. Informations had been sworn against three others, who were allowed out on bail, but did not surrender. Pat Farrelly examined—The prisoners, with several others, came to his house on the night in question, and, having been refused admittance, they broke in the door, dragged him outside,. and beat him most unmercifully; they said, the old rascal should get it for having taken the bog from the poor people, who could not be let famish for want of fire; is quite sure that is quite sure that the prisoners were of the party. They were both found guilty, and sentenced to transportation. Freeman’s Journal, 1 March 1842.
