John Barry and Jeremiah Maher, were indicted for stealing a trunk, the property of Timothy Collins—and Margaret M‘Carthy and Sarah Kelly, were indicted for receiving clothes knowing them to be stolen. The prosecutor’s wife was returning from Bristol in the Severn steam packet, and her trunk was on board, and she gave it to Barry, whom she had known before, to take home for her— After some time while she looked about, he went off with it, and the other men were in waiting, and all took it into the fields at the Western , and there they broke it open and took away the articles, of they gave to the female prisoner, M* wo, The two men Barry, and Maher were found Guilty, and ordered to be transported for seven years. The Cork Constitution, 1 April 1828.

Please ignore statement that he was sentenced to life. James Maher was sentenced to 7 years.

The Indentures state that Jeremiah Maher was 20 years old. He could read and write; religion Catholic; status single and is a native of Cork City. He was a groom. He was convicted of stealing clothes on 31 March 1828 at Cork and sentenced to life. He had two prior convictions. Physical attributes: Height 5 feet 2 3/4 inches; complexion ruddy; hair dark brown to black and eyes dark brown. Transport number 74. Assigned to Mr Harper, Hunter River.
