Built 1839 at Greenock, Scotland. Wood barque of 510 Tons. The 1848 voyage with Irish female convicts. The John Calvin, with 171 female convicts, arrived yesterday. She left London on the 26th December, and went to Kingston, when she took on board her prisoners, and left on the 24th January. There have been four deaths on board and three births, one infant still born. She did not touch any where and spoke no vessels for this place. Hobart Town Advertiser, 19 May 1848.

The John Calvin departed 24 Jan 1848 from Kingston, Isreland NOT April as stated above . Arrival Hobart 18/5/1848

John was transported from Calcutta, India - a native of that country. see his record for more details) Married: 1 Dec 1851 to John Doorby (aged 28yrs, widower) at the Manse, Morven (Evandale), Tasmania.

Anne MAHON was convicted at Carlow, Ireland on 16 Oct 1847 for stealing. 7yr sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'John Calvin' arriving 18 May 1848. House servant; Aged 25yrs; single; Roman Catholic. Native place - Carlow, Ireland. Station Gang: Anson. 6mths Probation period. 9 Oct 1849: Delivered of a female child, named Ellen, at the Launceston Female House of Correction. (ref. Convict conduct record) 9 Apr 1850: Disobedience of orders. 1 mth hard labour. Female Factory, Launceston. 22 Nov 1850: Insolence. 10 days in cells. 22 Apr 1851: Ticket of Leave granted. 26 Oct 1854: Certificate of Freedom, at Morven (Evandale).
