James Main - alias James Mayne

I have removed the alias "James McNab Main". James McNab Main is unlikely to be the same James Main transported on the Bengal Merchant, various records show the convict James Main (Bengal Merchant) was hanged in Sydney on 7 June 1839.

I think there may be some errors here. James McNab Main is unlikely to be the same James Main transported on the Bengal Merchant, various records show the convict James Main (Bengal Merchant) was hanged in Sydney on 7 June 1839.

James McNab Main was the half-brother of James Patrick Main (known as Patrick) who was transported on the Hibernia 1818, to VDL. James was transported for receiving stolen monogrammed serviettes. James is not listed on the NSW Gov Records, but somehow he got to VDL and 16/9/1840 married Isabella McRae Clerk. James then moved on to Victoria, probably with his brother Patrick. 1850: James was one of the authors of a book published by the Legislative Council of NSW on Catarrh in Sheep. 18/8/1853: Bought 3 lots of land in the Parish of Gorong (Ballan Area). 31/10/1894: At Dimora, Hawthorn Grove, Hawthorn, James McNab Main, aged 78 years. A colonist of 61 years. The Argus correspondent for 33 years.
