1839, 19 October: LAURENT MAINGARD is on a list of prisoners sentenced to transportation per “Water Witch” from Port Louis, Mauritius, to Van Diemen’s Land by the Criminal Court of the Colony of Mauritius. He is described as: single, aged 34, a barber; tried at the Assizes on 23 September, 1839, for receiving stolen goods and sentenced to 7 years; copper complexion, brown eyes and brown hair; 5’3¼”; paralytics [?]; native place Port Louis, Mauritius; cannot read or write (see New South Wales, Australia Convict Ship Muster Rolls and Related Records, 1790-1849).
