Edward MANN was convicted at Essex, England on 25 Nov 1834 for stealing boards and nails. Gaol Report: Previously convicted and given a transportation sentence, 30 yrs ago. Stated he had served the time at Sheerness. Has been in custody twice since. 7yr transportation sentence for this offence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Mangles' arriving there 1 Aug 1835. Married man, widower, 1 child. (ref. noted on Convict record) Aged 65 yrs; native place of birth - Thorpe. Occupation - farm labourer, can reap, sow, thrash & shepherd for sheep. 5'5 1/2" height; can read & write; Protestant religion. Brother: John, at Beccles. Sister: Sarah, married to D.Harwood (?) VDL: To work on the road works parties, by order of the Gov. Secretary. 22 Aug 1835: Died at the H.M. Colonial Hospital, Hobart. (Memo) Note: There were 5 convicts in the Colony around this time named "Edward Mann", but the death of this man is recorded on his records, to verify reference.
