Owen Manuel was transported on the John, departing 3rd Aug 1833 and arriving 1st Dec 1833 with 261 passengers.

Convict Notes




Owen Manuel was convicted along with John Clough/alias Thomas Cluff (Captain Cook 1833 NSW) for stealing a large quantity of wearing apparel. Owen's age on arrival is stated as 25 although Tasmania Gov. records also say he was born in 1796 in Ireland. Owen was 5'3" tall, sallow complexion, brown hair, light grey eyes, slightly pockpitted. Owen had been convicted twice before. 1835 Muster: Assigned to mr B C Johnson. 27/5/1840: TOL 3/2/1842: TOL cancelled for misconduct 24/5/1844: TOL 20/1/1849: COF 5/11/1853: COF 14/3/1866: Owen Manuel, a decrepid looking old man, who stated his age to be 76, applied for admission to the Invalid Depot, and having produced a medical certificate that he was a proper subject for that asylum, from age and infirmity ; his application was recommended and forwarded to the Colonial Secretary.
