Convict Notes
Catherine Maran [sic] arrived as a 20 year old kitchenmaid from Armagh on the 'Whitby' on 23 June 1839 after being sentenced in Armagh on 27 December 1838 to 7 years transportation for stealing yarn. She had previous conviction of 1 month. She was 5'4 1/4" tall, with ruddy and freckled complexion, black hair and dark hazel eyes. Here nose was cocked. On 29 October 1842, she had an illigitimate son Charles who was baptised on 9 June 1844 by Rev. Edward Rogers. The father was James Jordan, a sailor who lived at Mangrove. Charles lived with John and Catherine after their marriage and moved north with them in later years.
