MARGARET STEVENS, Theft > simple larceny, 18th October 1832. Reference Number: t18321018-135 Offence: Theft > simple larceny Verdict: Guilty Punishment: Transportation MARGARET STEVENS was indicted for stealing, on the 1st of October , 3 lbs. weight of soap, value 1s. 6d., the goods of George Parker ; and that she had been before convicted of felony . GEORGE PARKER . I live in Leather-lane , and am a grocer . On the 1st of October, about a quarter past five o'clock, I lost 3lbs. of soap from the side of my door - I was told of it - I went out and took the prisoner about twenty yards off with it. BENJAMIN PRIOR (Police-constable G 225). I took the prisoner.(Property produced and sworn to). JAMES STOGDON . I have a certificate of the former conviction of the prisoner - (read); I was present, and know she is the person. Prisoner. I was very much in liquor, and had the soap given to me. GUILTY . Aged 27. - Transported for Life . There was another indictment against the prisoner. Birth dates of 1805 1806 and 1814 are listed for Margaret. Margaret said that her husband had died while she was in Newgate (prison). 1833: House of correction 1835: Assigned to Mr McLay10/7/1843: Married John Moxham (Royal George 1830) – they had 5/7 children. 24/9/1888: Margaret died of Senilis at the New Town Pauper Establishment, Hobart. She was listed as being 82 and born in 1806.
Transported as widow, maiden name McCarty. Married John Moxham (transported aboard Royal George, 25th June 1830, to Tasmania) in 1843.
