Suffolk Lent Assizes Of the 42 prisoners tried at these Assizes, which ended on Monday about noon, ten were capitally convicted and received sentence of death, … — Mary Marjoram, for arson, in wilfully setting fire to the dwelling-house of Mr. John Welton, of Baddingham, on the 25th of November last. … Before the Judge left the town, he reprieved all the above culprits, except John Took, for the rape, and the three murderers. Mary Ann(e) Marjoram was convicted of arson at the Suffolk Assizes on 13 March 1812. Sentence death, commuted to transportation to NSW for life. Granted Conditional Pardon 30 Nov 1821. Mary spent 17 months in Suffolk gaol before sailing on hired transport 'Wanstead' from Spithead with 117 female convicts 24 August 1813. Arrived in Sydney 9 January 1814. Mary was sent to the female factory to work in the storeroom. She received Conditional Pardon No 1669/813 and an Absolute Pardon No 668. Mary married William Coates 3 January 1820 in St John's Parramatta by Rev Samuel Marsden and was buried under her maiden name by the Rev Henry Fulton on 3 March 1838, at Castlereagh.
