James Marshall transported for 14 years on “Duke of Portland” convict ship arriving July 1807. Tried: 24 Aug 1805, at Lancaster, Lancashire. 1811 - Convict, in NSW 23 January 1811 January - MARRIED Matilda Dyer. {arrived per “Canada” in March 1810). Both resided at Parramatta.Married at St John’s Church of England at Parramatta by Samuel Marsden. Matilda could sign her name but James Marshall made his mark. Witnesses were John Carey and Elizabeth Cook. Matilda was convicted of assault on the highway and stealing from the person. 1814 - Ticket of Leave No 14/0074 Native Place; Liverpool. year of birth: 1768, age 46. trade or calling: Carpenter, [ Source Reference: SRNSW 4/4427; Reel 601] Oct 1814 Muster * James Marshall arrived Duke of Portland, T/L, Carpenter, Mustered at Parramatta and *Matilda Dyer arrived per Canada (2), Convict, Mustered at Parramatta, Wife to James Marshall, Off stores. No registered burial record located on NSWBDM indexes of Matilda Dyer Marshall’s death. However, Matilda had died because James Marshall remarried in church to Convict Mary Smith arrived in 1819 on “Lord Wellington” MARRIAGE 29 January 1821 - James Marshall, widower aged 40, carpenter to Mary Smith, widow aged 26 os Sydney. Married at St Phillips Sydney by Rev Cowper. Witness were Maria Williams and JH Riley. 1820 - memorial to Governor From NSWBDM: children registered to James & Mary Marshall: Jane Marshall baptised 1822, Baptism - Rev Thomas Hassall as officiating minister, daughter of James and Mary Marshall of South Creek. Baptised 17 February 1822. Registration was at St Johns Parramatta. - Richard Charles Marshall, abode: parramatta. baptised 6 June 1824, by Rev Thomas Hassall as officiating minister Registration was at St Johns Parramatta. - Mary A Marshall, baptised 1827. Born 26 October 1827, baptised 4 May 1828 by Rev William Cowper St Phillips Church Sydney Sept 1825, - Carpenter of Parramatta. Now Free by Servitude 1828 Census - James Marshall aged 57. Protestant per Duke of Portland. 14 yrs. Fr by Serv. Carpenter. Residence: Clarence Street, householder. Living with him were Mary Smith aged 43. Protestant, arrived 1819 by Lord Wellington in 1819, 14 year sentence with Conditional Pardon. Housekeeper to James Marshall at Clarence Street, Sydney. and three children - Jane Marshall aged 7, Richard Marshall aged 5 ; and Mary A Marshall aged 15 months. There were two government servants - Thomas Paks aged 28, Tkt/L labourer residing at James Marshall’s and William Goodwin 43 yr old Baker Fr by S resign at James Marshall’s. 1837 Death: James Marshall, buried at Parramatta August 21 age 64, a labourer, officiating minister Henry Bobart, curate. (St John’s parramatta Burial register( _______________ Son Richard Charles Marshall would live to age 55 and be a stonemason by trade, He married Jane Mobbs and had ten children. Jane had been born in the colony at Pennant Hills, her father William came to Sydney in 1801 as a child himself, with his free mother Ann Grover following his convict father (William Mobbs, “Barwell”) to NSW. Richard Marshall lived at Pennant Hills and died in June 1878 a few days after falling down unexpectedly when at a pub in Parramatta and suffering an apparent haemorraghe. (Sydney Morning Herald Mon 17 Jun 1878 p. 3) Jane married John Barker in 1820 and remained living in Parramatta all her life until she was killed through the horse pulling her cart swerving and upsetting the cart on a bank. The rail all on her neck and she died the next day. Her daughter - “Miss Marshall” - was with her at the time of the cart being upset. (Armidale Express Sat 10 Sep 1870 p. 2) Mary Anne married at parramatta at age 20 to another of the Mobbs family - William Mobbs of Pennant Hills. Parramatta. this William Mobbs was first cousin to Mary Anne’s sister-in-law, Jane Mobbs, being the son of Isaac Mobbs who was another of the children who came with his free mother Grover following his convict father (William Mobbs, “Barwell”) to NSW. Mary Anne Marshall-Mobbs died of consumption aged 41 on 27 April 1868 as wife of William Mobbs, farmer of Pennant Hills and mother of seven children. (Sydney Morning Herald Wed 6 May 1868 p. 1)
