John MARSHALL was originally sentenced to 14yrs transportation - to New South Wales, Australia per the 'Layton' in 1829. Link to this record: http://www.convictrecords.com.au/convicts/marshall/john/58632 He absconded from the service of Dr. Cook in Sydney and stowed away on the 'Gilmore' until he came up on deck at Rio de Janeiro. He returned to England but was recognised by a Constable at Birmingham and resentenced at Warwick on 30 March 1833. Life sentence for returning from transportation. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'John II' arriving 1 Dec 1833. Aged 30yrs; Gentleman's servant; dark complexion; black hair; light Hazel eyes. Native Place - London No service details on his conduct record. Died at the hospital New Norfolk, Tasmania on 29 Jan 1835.
