1839, 19 October: Jean MARTIAL is on a list of prisoners sentenced to transportation per “Water Witch” from Port Louis, Mauritius, to Van Diemen’s Land by the Criminal Court of the Colony of Mauritius. He is described as: single, aged 45, a baker; tried for theft with violence at the Assizes on 3 July, 1839, and sentenced to 7 years; brown complexion, brown eyes and short curly hair; 5’10½”; native place Mauritius; cannot read or write. He is a “bad” character; formerly convicted of burglary on 23 March 1836, and served two years in chains (see New South Wales, Australia Convict Ship Muster Rolls and Related Records, 1790-1849; 1840 Layton).
