The convicted persons were then known as 'Exiles' because they had served part of their sentence in England and providing they were of good conduct were to be given a 'Ticket of Leave' or Conditional Pardon upon arrival in Australia. The 'Adelaide' arrived at Hobart, VDL on 29 Nov 1849 and disembarked 40 men. The ship then sailed to Port Phillip, Victoria but was refused entry and so sailed on to Port Jackson, New South Wales arriving there 24 Dec 1849. 1855 voyage: departed Portland, England on 19 April 1855, arriving Fremantle, Western Australia on 18 July 1855. 260 convicts, 1 death. The ship also carried 30 Pensioner Guards and their families.

George was the husband of Hannah Martin (PN 867) who was transported for 7 years on the Elizabeth and Henry arriving to VDL on the 30th June 1848. 4346 HANNAH MARTIN, PN 867. Tried at The Sessions 19 July 1847. 7 years. 26 years old, married from Kings County. "My husband George was transported 12 months ago. Father James, mother Mary, Brothers John, William, James, Burnett, Thomas all in Manchester". Hannah married James Simpson in Tasmania in 1851 and called herself a widow.

George Martin was transported as an ‘Exile’. He was tried at Lancaster. Liverpool Borough Quarter Sessions on 14/12/1846, sentenced to 10 years and was most likely transported after spending time in prison in England. George received a Ticket of Leave in the district of Broulee, NSW – no date found. 1854: Granted a CP.
