Colonial Conviction: Gen. Sess. Penrith, 30 Aug 1826, Run away threatening to burn his Masters wheat, 3 years. Returned to Sydney 14 Sep 1829. Description: Henry Martin, native place, Greaves Inn (sic) (Gravesend) Kent; age 34, 5 ft 3, sallow comp, lt brown hair, hazle eyes. Henry Martin, per ship Batavia, a prisoner for life, was charged with attempting to steal a chain from the Orphan School Institution, and with being a runaway from Major Druett, to whom he was assigned. John Matthews, the overseer, deposed that about 9 o'clock in the morning he was informed that a strange man was about the premises where the bullock harness is kept, among which was the chain in question. On apprehending this man, he proved to be the prisoner at the bar. This was the entire evidence before the court; notwithstanding which the prisoner frankly acknowledged stealing the chain, and also to his being a runaway from his master. On being asked the cause of his absconding, he stated that it was on account of the ill treatment which he received from his master. He was ordered to be remanded. The Australian, 30 Aug 1826. Henry Martin, government servant to Major Druett, was again brought up, when other evidence being taken to substantiate to the charge of stealing a chain, as mentioned in The Australian of the 25th inst.— he was adjudged guilty, and sent to Parramatta Court for sentence ; as it appearing that he was advertised as having committed another robbery, at the time he absconded, with directions, that in the event of the other robbery not being proved against him, he was to be returned to Liverpool, to be dealt with for stealing the chain. Throughout the whole of the proceeding he frankly acknowledged the charge against him stating ill-treatment to be his sole inducement. The Australian, 2 Sep 1826.

Martin, for breaking into the dwelling-house of Antoni Bernaschina, (in company with Luscomb.) Guilty, Death. Kentish Weekly Post, 8 Aug 1817. Thursday morning last were removed, under a strong guard, from his Majesty’s gaol at Maidstone, and put on board the Bellerophon Hulk at Sheerness, for transportation, the following male convicts, viz. William Beptley, Stephen Briant, Henry Martin, T Luscomb, John Lacey, Samuel Cramp, Woodcock, William Swift, George Gunnell, Willis. William Mannering, John Williams, and John Folkstone, Kentish Weekly Post, 16 Sept 1817.
