The following persons are indicted to take their trials at the ensuing assizes, to held Perth on the ‘2d October : … James Martin, housebreaking and theft; … Perthshire Courier, 30 Sept 1819. … the trial of James Martin, from Forfar, accused of breaking open the James Smith, farmer the parish of Inverary, in July last,’ and stealing therefrom some oatmeal, cheeses, and articles of apparel; and at that and at that time under sentence of banishment from that county. The prisoner pleaded not guilty, but, after a few witnesses had been examined, he retracted his plea on advice of his Counsel, and pleaded guilty. After an impressive address from the Lord Judge, he was sentenced to transportation for 14 years. ...
