John was born in Flitwick, Bedfordshire on 19 Dec 1805, son of William Martin and wife Elizabeth, nee Juggins. Until 1841, he lived at either Flitwick or nearby Ampthill. During that period, he married twice: to Amelia Wiggins in 1823 (two children) and to Phoebe Worker in 1829 ( five children). On 30 June 1841, he was convicted at Bedford Assizes of the assault and robbery of Alfred Tingey at Ampthill, BDF and sentenced to transportation for ten years. After time in the prison hulk "Justitia", he was transported on the "Duchess of Northumberland" to Hobart, where he arrived on 18 Jan 1843. In 1845, he began cohabiting with convict Jane Bailey (Bayliff). They resided initially at Launceston and from 1855, the family lived on 50 acres near Forthside TAS. After Jane's death in 1857, John and children returned to Launceston, where he died of "apoplexy" on 9 Feb 1862. He was survived by 6 children, the youngest of whom, Robert, was admitted to the Queen's Orphan School in Hobart.
