Mary HEWITT was convicted at Durham on 27 Feb 1833 for stealing from a dwelling house. Gaol Report: "bad, time in prison before". 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia per the ship 'William Bryan'. The convicted women boarded the ship (123 plus children and 9 free women) from 10 May 1833, departed London on 4 July to arrive at Hobart, VDL on 23 Oct 1833. It is noted on her record that she died onboard during the voyage. Ship Surgeon Thomas Robertson's diary indicates she was entered on the Sick List on June 15 at Woolwich and died on June 19 - severe cholera resulting in death (it would appear before the ship actually left port). 7 deaths for this voyage recorded.
