Convict Notes
Tried and convicted at the Northampton Assizes for the theft of 3 pecks of wheat in 1809, sentenced to transportation for 7 years. Left England on 23rd March 1810. Ship:- the 'Canada' sailed with 122 female convicts on board of which 1 died during the voyage. Arrived on 8th September 1810. Mary married James Starkey (Convict, Duke Of Portland, 1807) on December 5th at St Matthew's, Windsor, they had 4 children between 1811 and 1821. James died in 1831 at Sydney age 60. Mary died in 1833 at the Sydney Benevolent Asylum age 54.
In the 1828 Census of New South Wales, it is clear that the family has broken up. James is still alive until 1830, but not anywhere I can locate… [Ref S2338] Starkey, Mary, 50, free by servitude, Canada, 1810, 7 years, housekeeper, Kent Street. [Ref S2339] Starkey, James, 13, BC. [Ref S2336] Starkey, Thomas, 7, BC, Inmate at Parramatta Ophanage.
In the colony, Mary married James Starkey (Convict, Duke Of Portland, 1807) on December 5th at St Matthew's, Windsor. The couple had 4 children between 1811 and 1821. In the 1825 census there does not seem to be a mention of Mary or the elder daughter, Esther or younger son, Thomas? James Starkie free by servitude, Duke of Portland, 1807, 7 years, carpenter, Sydney. James Starkie age 14 born in the colony son of Jas. Starkie Sydney. Mary Starkie age 12 born on the colony son [sic] of Jas. Starkie Sydney.
Northampton Mercury Sat 1 Feb 1806 p.3 On Monday last was committed to the gaol of this county, by T.S.W. Samwell, Esq. Mary Manning, charged on suspicion of breaking open the dwelling-house of Mr. Vincent Litchfield, baker, of Kislingbury, and feloniously stealing thereout divers articles of wearing-apparel, his property. Must have been found Innocent?? Northampton Mercury Sat 4 Mar 1809 p.3 At the assizes for this county which commence on Monday next...the following prisoners are to take their trials...Mary Manning, charged on suspicion of having stolen three pecks of wheat, or thereabouts, from and out of a barn in the occupation of Thomas Morris, of Kislingbury, his property.
