Mary Murphy was transported on the Margaret, departing 1st Sep 1838 and arriving 5th Jan 1839 with 170 passengers.
Built 1829 at Chepstow. 365 tons. Female prisoners were transported to New South Wales on the 'Margaret' in 1837, 1839 and 1840. The 'Margaret' was the last convict ship to transport female prisoners to New South Wales. Another voyage to Van Diemen's Land in 1843. The 1840 sailing also carried 17 free female passengers and one male. The registers of persons is not yet complete on this web site, so please note this if researching. (A work in progress.)

Convict Notes
The Convict Indentures state that Mary Murphy was 25 years old. She could neither read nor write; religion Roman Catholic; status married with one son and a native of Kilkenny. She was a kitchen maid. Mary was convicted on 3 April 1838 at Carlow for stealing calico and sentenced to 7 years. She had one prior conviction and served 6 months. Physical attributes: Height 5 feet 0 3/4 inches; complexion dark sallow; dark brown nearly black and eyes brown. Transport number 10. Prisoner number 10-39. Comment on Indenture entry states that 'Husband Edward Murphy, a prisoner 13 months ago, sentence 7 years.
