On Thursday arrived from Calcutta, via Derwent, the ship Mary, Captain Ormon, with a various cargo. -Passengers from Calcutta, Captain Faithfull and Lieutenant Hamilton:-The Mary sailed from Calcutta the 23d of February, and left the Pilot the 1st of March. Hobart Town Gazette, 15 Sept 1827 List of Runaways 26. Townley, Mary, 5 ft. 1, light brown hair, hazel eyes, aged 22, a weaver, tried at Preston, October, 1822, 7 years, per Mary, native of Bolton, absconded from Launceston May 1823. Same reward. (£2). Conduct Record - https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON40-1-9$init=CON40-1-9 Image 163 Transported for petty larceny. Note that she is “on the town” ie, has worked as a prostitute. Many misdemeanours recorded. Absconding from her husband, etc.. Punishments include being in her cell on B & W (bread and Water), being sent to George Town factory, etc. Jan 27 1830, she was charged with stealing £7 in Bank Promissory Notes, the property of Jas. Moodie, - Discharged. The last entry on her conduct record is dated Dec 23 1830.
