Samuel MATTHEWS was convicted at Winchester, England on 1 March 1849 for stealing a gold watch. Prison report: "good". 10 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Equestrian' arriving 16 Dec 1852. Married man, widower (stated hiw wife died 2 yrs ago). Aged 25 yrs; a tailor & cutter; 5'6 1/2" height; can read & write; Church of England; fresh complexion; black hair; dark eyes. Native place of birth: Portsmouth, England. Mother: Elizabeth Brothers: John, William & Henry Sisters: Ellen, Louisa Colony of VDL: Passholder status given upon arrival. Assigned to Mr. Fitzgerald, Elizabeth St. Hobart. 8 Nov 1853: Ticket of Leave granted. 17 July 1855: Conditional Pardon approved. APPLICATION FOR PERMISSION TO MARRY: 24 Jan 1853: Samuel MATTHEWS (free by servitude status) to Charlotte SHOESMITH (per St. Vincent). Approved. 12 April 1854: Samuel MATTHEWS (per Equestrian) to Charlotte SHOESMITH (per St. Vincent). Approved. MARRIAGE: 29 May 1854: Samuel MATTHEWS, aged 36 yrs, a tailor to Charlotte SHOESMITH, aged 30 yrs, spinster, at St. George's Church of England, Hobart. CHILD: 22 Oct 1854: Charlotte MATTHEWS born Hobart. Father - Samuel MATTHEWS, tailor, Collins St. Hobart. Mother - Charlotte MATTHEWS (Shoughsmith). (ref. TA 32/1/3 no. 4827) 16 May 1856 - Samuel MATTHEWS born. Father - Samuel MATTHEWS, tailor, Collins St. Hobart. Mother - Charlotte SHOESMITH. (ref. 33/1/6 no. 1274) Note: Wife Charlotte SHOESMITH had a female child, Matilda, born Hobart (Female Factory) in 1851. Not known if she lived and/or lived with this family.
