The following extract from a letter published in 1837, refers to land held by Tully Matthews ibn his early years at Parramatta: SIR,— Many of your readers doubtless imagine that law and justice are synonomous terms ; the following case, decided on Wednesday, will remove so erroneous an impression, and afford a useful lesson to all landed proprietors. The following are the facts of the case :— James Stanford, deceased, had possession of an allotment of land in Parramatta in the year 1806 (how long before is not known) ; when he died he left the allotment to a person named Tully Matthews, who, having occasion to reside in Sydney, directed Richard Carkett to go with his wife and endeavour to sell the land ; they accordingly went to Mr. Oakes, then acting as an auctioneer, and it was sold by public auction for £14 2s 6d, in 1819. ... N.S.W. Govt. Gazette, 14 Nov 1832. (*Tully Matthews failed to employ Ellen Lynch, and so she was assigned to someone else.) -------------------------------------------------- Yesterday a man named Thomas Burke was brought on warrant before the Police charged with the following outrageous assault and threatening language : - Tully Matthews, who resides close to Burke, stated that the defendant kept a sly grog shop, which was in a most flourishing condition, to the great annoyance of the whole neighbourhood, but more especially to him, as his wife was in the habit of paying constant visits there for the purpose of tippling. Tully Matthews, jun. deposed that on St. Patrick's day finding his mother absent from her home he went to the house of Burke, suspecting she had gone there to drown the shamrock, upon his arrival his mother was let out of the house by the window, Burke then opened the door, and upon Matthews going up to it he struck him senseless with a poker, upon recovering himself he was told to go home and tell his father that he had laid an information against him, Burke, in return for which favor he would crop off his ears, and if the ears would not do he should take one half of his head - upon this the warrant was issued. The Bench sentenced him to pay a fine of 50s., and 5s. costs, and further to find sureties to keep the peace, himself in £10, and two sureties in £5 each. The restrictions placed upon the publicans and the diligence of the police, has in a great measure put a stop to those disgraceful scenes of drunkenness, have been so prevalent in the town of Sydney for a number of years past. A great many were confined during Monday and the evening of that day and the morning of Tuesday. Drunkards. Tully Matthews, Ward, 12 hours tread mill. Sydney Monitor, 9 Dec 1840.
