Convict Notes




Edmund Matthews was born in 1809 in Horsfield, Bristol, England. He was the son of William Matthews and Elizabeth (Possible nee McNamara-Hall). His parents married 7th April, 1805 at Bristol. Edmund was convicted of Housebreaking on 30th August 1827 at Gloucester when he was 19 years old. He was sentenced to 14 years Transportation. He then spent time on the prison Hulk, "Justitia" where it was recorded he was transported on 15 March, 1828. Edmund arrived in Van Demiens Land (Tasmania) and spent several years as a convict. He srved time at the Port Arthur Penal Colony and during his convict years received 100's of lashed were different breaches. He was granted a free certificate on the 10th September 1841. In September 1842, Edmund married Elizabeth Benbow at Windsor, NSW. They had six children, the first two, born at St Mary's, South Creek, NSW. The next child, Sarah, was born at Ashby, Geelong, Victoria. (The second wife of my G/G/Grandfather, James SMITH). The fourth and Fifth children were also born at Gelong and the last at Pentland, Victoria. Edmund died in 1874 at Alfred St, Richmond, Melbourne, aged 65 years. He was survived by his wife and four of his children. Edmund's wife, Elizabeth, left London and arrived in Sydney, Australia on board the ship "Lady McNaughton" on the 16th September 1840. Her passage to Australia was paid for and her occupation was listed as Nurserymaid.
