Transportation

John Matthews was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 31st Dec 1813 and arriving 28th Jul 1814 with 204 passengers.

Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

Moderator Note: THERE SEEMS TO BE SOME CONFUSION - THERE WAS A JOHN MATTHEWS (He married Faith Cooper) --- and JOHN MATTHEW PITMAN (He married Mary Sunderland) -- both were on board the Surrey 1814.

McElroy (15) at 1:43pm, 18th November 2017 wrote of John Matthews: He received “permission to marry” in 1822. Married Faith “Hearn” nee Cooper aged 22 (her 2nd Marriage) 29/2/1823…at St Lukes at Liverpool.(they lived at Parramatta). He was a servant to John Wylde judge advocate in 1819 & obtained a conditional Pardon in 1825. Initially a labourer, then shop keeper & later became a farmer in South Creek Prospect (a village very near today?s St Marys) after a land grant in 1833. Faith Matthews died March 1851 aged 49 a farmers wife. They had 10 Children….

In the colony, John married Faith Cooper about 1823. Faith was the daughter of the NSW Corps private, Robert Cooper and his wife Eleanor. Faith had come free to the colony with her parents aboard “Ann II” in 1810. Faith and John had 10 children between 1823 and 1844.
