Thursday, Feb. 2, 1837. Before Mr. Justice Burton and a Civil Jury. John Evans, free, and Mary Matthews, convict, were indicted for burglariously entering the dwelling-house of Samuel Barnett, at Sydney, on the 12th November. The prisoners were in the service of the prosecutor, and were left in charge of his house while he went to the Theatre, on the day laid in the indictment, and taking advantage of their master's absence, they entered the shop, with a false key, and would doubtless have had a considerable booty had they not have been disturbed. Guilty. Sentence of death was recorded against the prisoners, but was commuted to transportation to a penal settlement for fourteen years. Moreton Bay Convict Record Mary Mathews, Palambam, Tried at Cavan Jan 1830, 7 years for stealing calico. Dairy maid. Colonial conviction: S. Court Sydney, 2 Feb 1837, Larceny, sentence – 14 years. -------------------------------------------------- Moreton Bay was closed as a a penal settlement around 1839. -------------------------------------------------- Colonial Secretary letters regarding Moreton Bay. Letter from Moreton Bay, to Colonial Secretary, 9 May 1839. Letter re 2 female prisoners to remain in Moreton Bay- one in hospital, the other as her nurse. In margin: Rebecca Rideout - Sovereign Mary Mathews, Palambam. Details re Rebecca Rideout – employed in Factory as Constable & Asst to Matron – disgraceful conduct- in Brisbane hospital for accouchement. Recommends her removal as soon as convenient from Moreton Bay. -------------------------------------------------- Letter from Moreton Bay to Col Sec. Dated 30 July 1839.
