Old Bailey: RACHEL MATHEWS, Theft > grand larceny, 18th February 1801. Reference Number: t18010218-30 Offence: Theft > grand larceny Verdict: Guilty Punishment: Transportation RACHEL MATHEWS was indicated for feloniously stealing, on the 18th of January, a canvas purse, value 1d. four guineas, two half-guineas, a seven-shilling-piece, and two half-crowns, the property of William Cable. Prisoner's defence. This man asked me if he should go home with me, and he went with me into the entry, and gave me every farthing of that money. GUILTY, aged 31. Transported for seven years. Rachel was listed as working at the General Hospital, Sydney. Colonial Secretary Papers: MATHEWS, Rachel. Per "Nile", 1801 1810 Jun 23: Received certificate of freedom (Reel 6038; SZ758 p.65) 22/12/1811: Burial date – Rachel was 37 years old and Free By Servitude when she died and was buried at the Old Sydney Burial Ground.
