Thomas Matthews was convicted at Monmouth 21/08/1824 for horse stealing. Life sentence. Transported to NSW, Australia on the 'Royal Charlotte'. Thomas was again convicted, at Campbell Town, NSW on 20/01/1841 for cattle stealing. 10 yr sentence to Van Diemen's Land. Station Gang: Norfolk Island (N.I. was administered by VDL at this time.) Arrived VDL 01/01/1842 (not clear if this was Tasmania or Norfolk Island. There is a note on Conduct Record sheet that he was not at N.I. 31/12/1853.) No other details on his record page.

Married Hannah Ford in 1826 in Parramatta (New South Wales) Convicted again 20 Jan, 1841 for Cattle Stealing at Campbelltown Goal. Sentenced to 10 years in Tasmania. Had two children, James 1829 and John 1833 in Parramatta.
