James Maulden was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 13th Jul 1829 and arriving 14th Dec 1829 with 200 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

Convicted at Hobart 4th March 1845 - Charge Bigamy. Found guilty; 7 years Port Arthur




James Maulden was convicted at Suffolk on 23/-3/1829 for stealing. Convicted before. Life sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the 'Surrey' arriving 14/12/1829. Hulk Report: orderly Gaol Report: orderly Married man, 2 children at Woodbridge - cared for by Parish. Shoemaker; aged 26yrs; dark complexion; black hair; light brown eyes. Native place - Melton, Suffolk. Assignments in Colony, including being assigned as a Constable. Numerous records of misconduct on record. Application for permission to marry 26/05/1836 to Mary Ann Ody (transported per 'America'). Married 19/10/1836 Launceston. (ref. 3452/1836-36) Ticket of Leave 07/02/1840. 1842: Receiving stolen property - to be sent to Port Arthur Penal Settlement, but instead went to Oatlands. 1844: Felony - committed for trial. To be sent to Port Arthur for 2yrs. 14/02/1835: Bigamy - committed for trial. Application for permission to marry Mary Lee (transported per 'Woodbridge') 1850 & again 1851. Married 23/09/1851 Hobart (ref. 302/1851-37). Record under spelling "Moulden". Application for permission to marry Eliza Dunn/Dunne (transported per 'Blackfriar'), James now free - 27/09/1855. No record found of it proceeding.
